RSS Volunteer Information

Volunteers are an integral part of the Rowan-Salisbury Schools outlook on serving our students. Parents that get involved early in their children's education see more pronounced and longer-lasting results. Benefits for students include: earning better grades, scoring higher on tests, attending school more regularly, having better social skills, and having a more positive overall attitude toward school.

A chart outlines community participation levels, including observer and volunteer roles.

OBSERVERS:

If you want to attend an event as an observer that does not pose the potential to interact and/or supervise students (awards ceremonies, etc.) you do not need volunteer training. Field trips are NOT observer events and DO require volunteer status and background checks.

VOLUNTEER / PARTICIPANTS:

RSS has two tiers of volunteers. Tier I is required to submit a volunteer registration, background screening, and the volunteer interest form. Tier II is required to complete the Tier I process and attend a volunteer training session. Both tier levels assume potential interaction with and supervision of students, which is why training and background screening are required.

TRAINING:

Please click Communities in Schools Rowan for upcoming training dates and times.

You can attend a training session with Communities in Schools or at a Rowan-Salisbury Schools session, as they are reciprocal. If you need assistance with the background screening, please call 704-439-3900. The Communities in Schools and RSS Volunteer process is normally completed within 1-2 weeks.

FAQS

  • Due to the instructional nature of field trips and the likelihood of interacting with multiple students, Rowan-Salisbury Schools requires this training as a precautionary measure to ensure all students are properly supervised and cared for.

  • The background check is conducted through BIB (Background Investigation Bureau). You do not need to complete it before training. During the training session, we provide clear instructions and help you complete the background check if needed.

  • Background checks are valid for three years, so if yours is still current, you do not need to complete it again.

  • Training typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes, but it may take longer if you need assistance with the background check.

  • At this time, training sessions are in-person only

  • Training is not required as long as your background check is up to date, which is typically valid for three years.
